Course Descriptions

Natural Lost Wax Casting – Bronze or Silver
This five day workshop provides the opportunity for up to twelve artists to realise a small sculpture in bronze or silver while introducing them to a method of casting metal that uses only natural materials. The focus of this introductory workshop will be on teaching the Luted Crucible casting process itself so that participants become familiar with the details of the process, the qualities of the materials, and the benefits of the technique.

Natural Bronze Casting – Advanced Course
Artists who have completed the introductory Natural Lost Wax Casting course are in a unique position to consider the Luted Crucible process as a method for creating larger work. The five day Advanced Casting workshop is designed to allow eight artists to “scale up” their work and begin creating larger bronze sculptures pushing the limits of the Luted Crucible process’ potential. Maximum amount of beeswax per artist will be 166 grams, allowing for individual casting of 2 kilos of bronze. The workshop begins online before we meet so we can discuss ideas and designs, understand potential problems and prepare materials. We will continue to use a wood fire, in order to develop the artist’s ability to cast in a wood fire.

Introduction to Hollow Casting – Bell Making
This five day workshop provides the opportunity for twelve artists to learn the basics of hollow casting using the Luted Crucible process. We will create bronze bells by first making cores, the interior form of the bell, out of sand, clay and animal dung. The cores need to be ready in advance thus this workshop requires either some advance preparation, or use of pre-made cores. Once the workshop has started we will make beeswax threads, using a traditional wax press, with which to cover the core to form the bell. After the bell has been formed in wax we will continue with the Luted Crucible technique to cast the bell.

Natural Casting – Experimental Course
Are you ready to consider the Luted Crucible process as a method for unbridled experimentation? Whether you are interested in creating wood fired clay and metal objects, using the Luted Crucible process to melt and cast materials other than bronze, create unusual alloys or experiment in other ways, this five day workshop is designed to further personal investigation. Up to eight artists will be individually guided throughout the workshop. Essentially the workshop begins online a few weeks before actually meeting so we can discuss ideas and designs, understand potential problems and prepare materials. We will use a wood fire, so as to develop the artists ability to cast in a wood fire. Because the course is experimental, previous experience with Luted Crucible casting, while helpful, is not required.
